Timber Looks, Without Timber's To-Do List

There's a lot to love about a weatherboarded home in Suffolk — it's part of the landscape here, from seafront houses in Felixstowe to cottages along the Deben in Woodbridge. What's harder to love is the ladder, the sanding, and the tin of paint every few summers. That's exactly the problem Hardie® Plank was made to solve, and it's why cladding has become one of the most requested projects we take on from our Martlesham base, in homes across Kesgrave, Ipswich, Woodbridge, Felixstowe and throughout Suffolk and Essex.

We install two fibre cement cladding systems, both manufactured by James Hardie — the world's biggest name in fibre cement. The classic Hardie® Plank is a traditional overlapping weatherboard with a choice of cedar wood-grain or smooth textures, while the Hardie® VL Plank uses an interlocking tongue-and-groove fit for a flat, contemporary facade. Both arrive factory-finished in James Hardie's fade-resistant ColourPlus™ technology, carry an A2 fire classification, and simply never need painting. They're fitted on a properly ventilated batten system by our own installation team — never subcontractors.

Every project starts with a free, no-obligation survey, is protected by our 10-year installation guarantee, and the boards themselves are backed by James Hardie's 15-year manufacturer warranty.

Choose Your System

Not sure which is right for your home? The simple version: Hardie® Plank gives you the classic overlapping weatherboard look Suffolk is known for; Hardie® VL Plank creates a sleek, flush, modern facade. We'll bring samples of both to your free survey.

The Classic Weatherboard

Hardie® Plank

The original and best-known fibre cement weatherboard. Each board overlaps the one below, just like traditional timber cladding — so it looks completely at home on a coastal property in Felixstowe or a period cottage near Woodbridge, but shrugs off rain, salt air, rot and insects for decades. Choose a cedar wood-grain texture for a natural look, or smooth for something crisper.

TexturesCedar wood-grain or smooth
Colours21 ColourPlus™ fade-resistant colours
Fire ratingA2-s1,d0 (EN 13501-1)
Warranty15-year manufacturer warranty
In plain English: the timber weatherboard look Suffolk homes were made for — except it never rots, never warps, and never needs a paintbrush.
The Modern Flush Facade

Hardie® VL Plank

For homeowners who want a cleaner, more architectural look. VL Plank boards interlock with a tongue-and-groove fit, so instead of overlapping steps you get a flat facade with sharp, even shadow lines. It can be run horizontally or vertically, which makes it a favourite for extensions, garden rooms and contemporary new builds around Ipswich and Kesgrave.

In plain English: the sleek, seamless, "grand designs" finish — flat boards, crisp lines, and a facade that looks freshly decorated year after year.

Lead Times

Survey to Installation: 8–10 Weeks

From your free survey to the first board going on the wall, our current lead time is 8 to 10 weeks. Here's how it works: we survey your property and measure every elevation, you choose your system, colour and texture from real samples, we order the boards and colour-matched trims, and we book your installation date. Time on site depends on the size of the job — a gable end or garden room usually takes 2–3 days, while a full house re-clad is typically 1–2 weeks, with our team tidying up at the end of every day. Special-order colours or repairs to the structure beneath old cladding can occasionally extend this, and we'll always give you an honest timeline at quotation stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Hardie® Plank and Hardie® VL Plank?
Both are fibre cement cladding boards manufactured by James Hardie. Hardie® Plank is the classic overlapping weatherboard — each 180mm board laps over the one below for a traditional coastal look, and it comes in 21 ColourPlus™ colours with a cedar wood-grain or smooth texture. Hardie® VL Plank is the modern alternative: its boards interlock with a tongue-and-groove fit to create a flat, flush facade with crisp shadow lines, and it can be fitted horizontally or vertically. During your free survey we will bring samples of both so you can see and feel the difference before deciding.
How long does a cladding installation take from order?
Our current lead time from survey to installation is 8 to 10 weeks. After your free survey we confirm the measurements, agree your colour and texture, order the boards and trims, and book your installation date. Time on site depends on the size of the project: a gable end or garden room is typically finished in 2 to 3 days, while a full house re-clad usually takes 1 to 2 weeks.
Do I need planning permission to clad my house in Suffolk?
In many cases, re-cladding a house falls under Permitted Development, provided the materials are of a similar appearance to those used in the existing house. However, cladding rules are stricter than for windows and doors: if you live in a conservation area, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty such as the Suffolk Coast & Heaths, or a listed building, planning permission will almost certainly be required before any cladding is fitted. Our surveyor will flag any planning considerations during your free consultation, and we always recommend checking with your local authority — East Suffolk or Ipswich Borough Council for most of our customers — before work begins.
Does Hardie® Plank cladding need painting or maintenance?
No repainting is needed. Hardie® Plank boards arrive from the factory fully sealed, primed and finished with James Hardie's baked-on ColourPlus™ technology, which is engineered to resist fading, cracking and peeling. Unlike timber weatherboard there is no rot, warping or splitting, and unlike uPVC it will not become brittle or discolour. An occasional wash-down with water is all it needs to keep looking its best.
Is Hardie® Plank cladding fire safe?
Yes. Hardie® Plank is a fibre cement product with an A2-s1,d0 fire classification under EN 13501-1, meaning it is of limited combustibility and will not contribute to the spread of a fire. This makes it one of the safest cladding choices available for homes, and a popular replacement for older timber or uPVC weatherboarding.
What areas do you install cladding in?
We are based in Martlesham and install across all surrounding areas including Kesgrave, Ipswich, Woodbridge, Felixstowe, Martlesham Heath, Rushmere St Andrew, and throughout Suffolk and Essex. If you're unsure whether we cover your area, call 01473 614 444.
Is your cladding work guaranteed?
Yes. Every installation comes with our comprehensive 10-year installation guarantee, and the Hardie® Plank boards themselves are backed by a 15-year manufacturer warranty from James Hardie against warping, cracking, peeling and rotting. Homestyle Windows has been trading from Martlesham since 1999 and we are a FENSA-registered company, so you are dealing with an established, accountable local installer.

What Our Cladding Customers Say

Reviews related to our cladding installations

Sarah & Tom P. • Felixstowe★★★★★

Our old timber weatherboard was rotting through and needed painting every other year. The Hardie Plank in Light Mist has completely transformed the front of the house — neighbours keep asking who did it.

Graham L. • Kesgrave★★★★★

Had our gable end clad in anthracite grey to match the new windows Homestyle fitted last year. Tidy, punctual, and the colour-matched trims around the edges are a really neat touch.

Rebecca H. • Woodbridge★★★★★

Brilliant advice at the survey — they talked us through planning considerations for our area before we committed, which we really appreciated. The finished cladding looks fantastic.

Ian & Chris M. • Ipswich★★★★★

We went for the VL Plank on our extension and it looks so sharp — completely flat with lovely crisp lines. Fitted on schedule and the team left the garden spotless every evening.
